Lou Ruvo Brain Institute – Las Vegas, NV

The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry. Gehry’s portfolio includes such projects as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

Gehry’s design of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is nothing short of remarkable. Director Jeffrey Cummings says that the building constantly inspires its workers: “When we go to work in a sculptural masterpiece, it has the effect of making you want to live up to the expectations established by the building.”

Gehry made it a point to remove the structure from a typical medical setting. Much like in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Gehry chose to use warm, honey-colored Douglas fir on all doors, frames, and furniture. In the concert hall, the wood mimics the instruments. In the Lou Ruvo Center, it creates a calming, comforting feeling. Straight, tense hallways were avoided, and, instead, Gehry made them curved to limit interaction between patients in different stages of treatment.

The exterior of the building is a classic Gehry design of stainless steel panels. Under the panels, DELTA®-TRELA was chosen as the underlayment to be the secondary water protection layer for the structure. DELTA®-TRELA is a highly vapor permeable underlayment with integrated structural separation layer. Around 13,000 sqft (1,200 m²) of DELTA®-TRELA were used on The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, which reliably channels any moisture to the exterior, and reduces noise from possible rain and hail by up to 15 dB.
